Obesity - A Threat To Fertility

Obesity and infertility are interlinked conditions. Obesity directly affects infertility by causing hormonal imbalances, ovulation, particularly for their first baby. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition associated with obesity. PCOS & obesity together causes infertility commonly. Early diagnosis, healthy lifestyle, and proper treatment can optimize the rate of fertility.

Obesity is being a key factor for many ailments other than infertility. The following conditions would be met out by the obese persons:
  • Diabetes
  • Cancers
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Respiratory problems
  • Gout
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Hypertension

Obesity in Male:

Obesity in men also causes infertility. It affects men basic lifestyle, fertility dysfunction. This condition may affect men at any stage. Obesity during their puberty phase leads to hormonal imbalances, lower levels of sperm and accumulation of fat in the abdominal region. The low testosterone levels affect the puberty and thus delays the growth of the body and facial hair, voice change, etc. Obesity leads to low sperm count. Though the sperms produced, it may be weak with low motility, shape irregularities. It also causes erectile dysfunction. Obesity in men even limits the chances of fertility in “In Vitro Fertilization” (IVF). Though the baby born it may have some deformities. After treating the obesity only, fertility treatment has proceeded to the infertile men. Along with the treatment, strict diet and regular exercise help to increases the chance of fertility.

Obesity in Female:

Obesity occurs mainly when the excess calories consumed and the same is not spent by doing any kind of activities. Obesity is a known factor to increase infertility in women. Irregular menstrual cycle, lack of ovulation, a drip in Oocyte quality, increased miscarriages and inability to conceive are the key factors of obesity. PCOS is the main factor for female infertility. Increased weight not only affects fertility rate but also causes many ailments such as cardiac issues, diabetes, neck, back and joint pain. The success rate of fertility declines even in ART due to the poor quality of eggs. The babies born to obese women may suffer from congenital abnormality.

Obese women are primarily treated with weight loss program before hoping to fertility treatment. Obesity can be controlled by regular diet and exercise. If the weight loss is not manageable with diet and exercise, then advanced treatments are availed to women for weight loss.
